Day Trip in the Finger Lakes – July 16, 2013

The Finger Lakes has so much fun stuff to see and do.  This Tuesday morning I headed  out from Another World Bed and Breakfast in Naples, NY in the Canandaigua Lake area on Rt. 245 to explore some of the sights and attractions.  First stop was Maple Ridge Farm Greenhouse in Stanley.  The hanging baskets and plant arrangements that they do are so imaginative and unique.  Then, I picked up Rt. 5 and 20 in Geneva and travelled east.  The next stop was Mary-Ann’s Treasures, a cute shop selling country and primitive gifts in Waterloo, the town where Memorial Day originated.  From there, it was off to Sauder’s, a Mennonite country store that sells a variety of foods such as flour, spices, sugar, vanilla in bulk at great prices.  They also have great boneless chicken breasts, thick sliced bacon, cheeses, deli meats, and cage free eggs.  Their bread and butter pickles are out of this world.  Back out on the road, I went through Seneca Falls, that is believed to be the town that served as the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the movie It’s a Beautiful Life with Jimmy Stewart.  Took a right onto Rt. 414 and traveled to Romulus where I stopped at Swedish Hill Winery for a wine tasting.  Swedish Hill produces some of the most award-winning wines in the Finger Lakes region. They have received  the “Governor’s Cups” (the highest award given to a New York State wine) three times– 1994, 2008, and 2010.  Thoroughly enjoyed their wine and bought a couple of bottles to take home.  Continuing on Rt. 414 South, I passed through the hamlets of Ovid and then Lodi where I had lunch at Wagner Vineyards Ginny Lee Cafe that overlooks Seneca Lake.  The chef’s specialty salad was served with a delicious house dressing that incorporated one of the winery’s chardonnays.  On the road again I followed Rt. 414 south to Watkins Glen, then north on Rt.14 to Rt. 54 west into Penn Yan.  Out of Penn Yan, I took Rt. 54A south to Seneca Farms which was established in 1950 and sells some of the best homemade ice cream in the Finger Lakes.  I had a dish of black raspberry ice cream and it was rich and creamy and outstanding.  For the final stretch of my day tour, I drove on back roads through the scenic Italy Valley and arrived back in Naples, NY.  Total touring time 6 hours.seneca falls

Finger Lakes Cherries

Cherries are now available at Joseph’s Wayside Market in Naples, NY in the Canandaigua Lake area.  It is one of the best farm markets in the Finger Lakes.  I think I will be baking cherry pies for my guests.Cherries

One of My Favorite Finger Lakes Antiques Shows

Finger Lakes Antique Show

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Bloomfield – 54th Annual Antique Show and Sale
The 54th annual St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Antique show takes place July 13, 2013 from 10am -4pm(early admission 9am-10am) in Bloomfield, NY on the Village Green on Routes 5 and 20.  Bloomfield is a beautiful, scenic 25 minute or so drive from Another World B&B, a Canandaigua area inn, in Naples, NY.  This show features 60 dealers selling antiques and collectibles – furniture, china and glass, lighting, rugs, memorabilia, etc.  This is one of my favorite Finger Lakes antique shows.  Great antiques at down to earth prices.
While in Bloomfield, enjoy lunch at the Holloway House.  This old fashioned, charming, New England style inn serves lunch from 11:30am-2pm.  Be sure to order a piece of the homemade black cherry pie which is now in season.  It is absolutely outstanding.

Great Summer Weather in the Finger Lakes — Finally

The Sun Has Reappeared

After a soggy late spring and early summer, finally–blue sky and sun in the Finger Lakes.  Just picture perfect summer weather is forecast for the next several days.  Tomorrow I will be heading out to the porch of Another World B&B in Naples, NY for an iced tea and some stitching on an applique quilt I’ve been working on.

Deer with Fawn

For the last few weeks I had not seen many deer around Another World Bed and Breakfast.  The Finger Lakes, Canandaigua and Naples typically have an abundance of white tailed deer.  There is a herd of seven that usually hangs out around the inn.  Then, this past week, I saw a deer feeding on the hillside in the back yard around 7 o’clock in the morning.  She looked quite thin and was eating up a storm.  Around 11 o’clock I looked out a window in the sun room and this same doe was grazing about 12 feet away.  Then, out of the woods came a tiny fawn and it started to nurse.  This doe obviously was eating for two.  I moved to get the camera to capture this wonderful scene, but my motion scared them off and back into the woods.  This moment, however fleeting, was certainly priceless.
